⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Just Fabulous

Think of what you would hope for in a Mary Berry recipe book-this is exactly it. We have one of her how-to-do-everything-type cook books and it is fabulous. Everything is thoroughly flop proof. This book is the same. It is also beautifully laid out. It focuses on entertaining for large groups and each recipe has a version for 6 people and a version for 12 people. It has handy chapters in the beginning on Equipment and serving, as well as a fab “cheats and shorcuts” chapter full of great tips. I have added a photo of the names of the chapters plus some pages with recipes.
The food itself looks gorgeous-it’s very well photographed and the book has a matt finish to it (careful cooking near it as splashes are unlikely to wipe off!) The food is classic English cuisine (old favourites like shepherds pie but with a twist to make it fancier) but includes pasta dishes, plus there’s a good selection of fish, vegetarian dishes, puddings and sides, including salads. The 6 person recipes will be great for batch cooking too.
I can see myself using this for years. This will make a lovely gift and it is priced about right.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ An excellent cookbook.

Why anything by Mary Berry needs a review made me wonder when I received this; it’s also by Dorling Kindersley, again, a publisher whose books tend always to be rather good. That isn’t to say Mary Berry or DK can’t make mistakes – I’m sure they can. But not with this one. This is a very straightforward and comprehensive collection of recipes suited to feed 6 or 12 people (but, in actuality, with a little calculation of quantities, for any number, even two…).
Each of the recipes is presented in a clear and concise way as well as being well illustrated (the paper chosen does make the photos look a touch “flat” though, but not to the point of distraction); each has a little more than a basic recipe for each, by which I mean Mary (aided by Lucy Young) also gives some tips and tricks along with a short story-like introduction to each recipe to tempt you to make it. I did get a little bored by being told how “easy” or “quick” this or that can be. Are we incapable of complexity these days?
There are also brief sections, a little like Delia Smith does, on choosing the right utensils and so on, and even for some recipes what to do if you own an Aga! But this isn’t really an Aga-owner’s cookery book, being aimed at a much wider audience. It is, though, an excellent cookbook for beginners or experienced cooks, for sure.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Super!

On the whole I feel Mary Berry can do no wrong – this is no exception – a super book.
This was published this year 2019 – it says first published in 2010 – so beware you might have an older version already!
I have lots of Mary Berry’s books and I love them all.
The main recipes have instructions for 6 and for 12 servings which is very useful – can do these larger amounts for the freezer with some of them.
The photographs are good.
The text – as with many books – I need my glasses – which is a pity in the kitchen – I often jot down the main items in larger handwriting.
As well as the recipes – there are notes on planning and cheats and shortcuts and lots of other party tips.
Shepherd’s Pie Dauphinnois is good as is the Loch Fyne Haddock Bake.
I am planning to make the Mincemeat buns later today.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Another Mary Berry Winner

This review is done by my better 3/4. Not only is she CEO of the kitchen whilst I am merely her lacky to be directed as needed when preparing food, she is also a very good cook. Something she obviously got from her dad who was a chef in the RAF not her mum who could burn water….. So over to SWMBO.
My Mum, bless her, was a dreadful cook (think Wendy Craig in Butterflies) so I was inspired to be at least a little better. I am no chef, but I can follow a recipe with decent results. To this end I often buy cookery books that are released following a cookery series on TV and more often than not, am disappointed that, the only recipes I fancy are indeed the ones featured in the program.
The same can not be said for this one! Almost every page features something I want to try, somethings are fairly standard chilli, shepherds pie etc for which I already have my ‘go to’ recipes for, but it’s always good to try a slightly different method, and Mary certainly helps with this one. Other recipes are slightly more up market, but with easy to follow steps, ensure achievable results.
As is popular now, pastry recipes will encourage the use of bought pastry – which I am fully on board with, cooking should be a pleasure not something to get stressed over and any elements which some would consider a ‘cheat’, to me, are just time saving components. With more and more people eating take-away’s and eating out, anything that helps with home cooking should be encouraged.
The book is well laid out, with lovely graphics, well we all eat with our eyes, and for me personally, it’s important to be able to see what the recipe should at least look like.
Mary never disappoints with her books and I think this book is another winner and a kitchen shelf staple.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Lovely book, even if you don’t cook!

I have lots of Mary Berry books and love them all, this is no exception. This focuses on entertaining and shows recipes for groups from 4-12. The welcome thing with Mary Berry is that she always produces “real” recipes that I feel I would and could actually use. The coloured plates are beautiful and motivate you to want to reproduce the dishes. Also the recipes offer precise guidance and are easy to follow. It provides several pages of advice on preparation and presentation, which stops you short and makes you want to plan rather than just jump in with both feet which is my norm. It also highlights what can be prepared ahead of time and how to store it which is welcome. It’s the type of book I’ll return to time and again often just to look through because it’s lovely!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Classics

A re-issue of an earlier publication, this presents food suitable for entertaining; most items have two side by side ingredients lists with quantities given for 6 and 12 people respectively – can’t believe that people are unable to multiply by 2…
The recipes are for the most part classics, and in this sense the book probably wouldn’t look too out of place if it fell through a space-time wormhole and ended up back in the ’80s.
Nothing at all wrong with that though. When hosting for numbers you want something not too complicated or taxing, you want something achievable and which is going to be a “crowd-pleaser” as they say. A good book to have available for this purpose.

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Beautiful Recipe Book

This would make a great gift for any Mary Berry or food fan. The hardback book is a work of art. Great quality paper, proper photography, clearly laid out recipes, hearty food ideas. It’s a substantial size too – you could feed a whole family for a year with what’s in this without getting bored of repetition! As per the title the focus is more on feasts than everyday food – but that’s the kind of cooking most of us need guidance with – so it’s well received.

Absolutely love this book. The choice of recipes which are offered in 4 and 12 serving size are vast, varied and whilst some are more personally appealing than others, there’s so much choice. The book is beautifully presented with a ribbon bookmark and lovely images for the majority of recipes. I totally recommend.
