This book is a great companion to Zak’s YouTube Channel. I have a 11 week old golden retriever that I have taught to leave it, lay down, paw/touch, look at me, and walk on a leash all using the videos! I was still having a lot of problems with her separation anxiety, food stealing (or attempting to), and constant chewing and biting. I got Zak’s book to help guide me in these areas because even though she’s a puppy, I didn’t want to let bad habits go unchecked. Loved Zak George’s first book and was very enthused to see he was writing a second. We currently have a Miniature Schnauzer pup and this book has already helped us troubleshoot several problem behaviours. Awesome read as usual. Really appreciate Zak’s scientific and level-headed approach to dog training, and his focus on keeping the bond between you and your dog in the center of your training methods. I’ve followed dog trainers like Cesar Milan in the past and I don’t dislike him, but I do feel like the whole ‘dogs are wolves and you need to dominate them’ thing is pretty unrealistic at this point – after hundreds of years of breeding them to work with us, I think Zak’s approach makes a LOT more sense. Plus, not being rough or rude with dogs makes them less likely to be scared/aggressive, I believe. When our pup is unreasonable to work with, she gets a brief time out on her own in the safety of her playpen so she can work out that when she’s nice she gets to play with us, and when she’s not she doesn’t. This isn’t particularly endorsed by Zak, but for our sanity during this puppy biting stage we have found it necessary so as not to become frustrated. Haha Great book!!!!! Would recommend to anyone who loves dogs and wants to communicate more effectively with them!

Zak George is an amazing trainer. When I was preparing to get my bernedoodle puppy a year and a half ago, I read Zak’s first book, Dog Training Revolution. Throughout the last 18 months, I’ve used Zak’s book and youtube videos to help me stay positive and stay patient while training my Indy. (Yes the name was inspired by Bree’s dog Indy) Now 18 months later, I still use Zak’s tools to guide me when working with my dog, that’s why I bought Zak George’s Guide to a Well-Behaved Dog. Zak teaches you how to create a bond with your dog while training instead of using inhumane tools like shock or prong collars. I appreciate that he teaches luring into a trick at first instead of forcing your dog into a position, it really taught my dog that it’s his choice to follow my words, but doing so gets him a reward. I appreciate that this book is a great guide whether you have a puppy or an older dog because the beginning stages of learning no longer apply to me, but I still like to keep up with training and learning to communicate with my dog.

I loved this book. It is chock full of real information about how to train your dog and deal with a lot of the troublesome behaviors that are common for puppies and adult dogs too. I am applying all of the advice I e read and I am finding that my puppy responds to this type of training very well. I used to follow Cesar Milan but I was always very unhappy with the way he asks us to view dogs. I felt like I couldn’t really cuddle my dog or let him lay in bed with me and I feel that our relationship suffered as a result. I even had to use a prong collar to walk my dog all of his life. He passed away last year and now with my new puppy I wanted a different way to train her and I found Zak George. So much better! So much love! I will never train any other way. I highly recommend his books and videos and I even like the products he recommends. I find that his book is well researched and he has the science to back up his approach. Must read book!

Zak George’s infectious positivity and love for dogs, their owners, and the relationship forged between the two, could make even the greenest dog owner confident in their ability to train their pet! This is an excellent book for either new dog owners or owners of older dogs. I could imagine that it would be EXTREMELY helpful for folks who are rescuing adult or or older-puppy dogs with established, less-than-desirable habits. And yet, as my family and I prepare to bring a new puppy into our home this weekend, we also feel very prepared to avoid unwanted behaviors before they ever start, thanks to both this and The Dog Training Revolution. If you’re looking for a positive, punishment-and-anger-free approach to training, loving, and building a life with your dog, look no further than Zak!
