You really can’t go wrong with DK books and this is a beautiful example. Every child should have an encyclopaedia and this is one of the very best I’ve come across.

I used to have an encyclopedia like this when I was a boy so I was really pleased to see they still made them for the younger generation.
Besides
This one seems reasonably up to date with bits on emojis and lists only eight planets so there’s good reason to replace an older version. There is good photography, clear diagrams and although there is a UK bias (“Kings and Queens of England and Britain” alongside “Prime Ministers of Britain” rather than lists of US presidents) there is a reasonable international balance with Hokusai’s The Great Wave being shown in the ‘Art’ page and the Mexican Day of the Dead featuring on the ‘Festivals’ page.
Google and Wikipedia are still going to be easier and potentially have more detail, but there are also likely to be too American. This DK book is good quality, shows no obvious political bias and has a reliable editorial stance so you know it’s safe. Make sure the next generation still know how to use reference books in the internet age!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Amazing fact eBook!

DK are doing some really good books lately, and this is no exception.
It’s thicker than you might expect at around double the thickness of the average DK book.
Each page is full colour, and the topics are basically alphabetic. The pictures are outstanding and the pages are inviting and vivid.
It’s one topic per page, so obviously the breadth is limited, this is not encyclopaedia britannica or wikipedia.
However if your child is a “fact book” type of reader then this is ideal. You can just drop in at any page and read it.
Agewise, I’m thinking 7-13.
For the price it’s amazing, even at the RRP. Definitely recommended!

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Still relevant in the iPad era

My eight year old nephew was surprisingly pleased with this surprise present. Being wedded to his iPad I thought it might fall flat but I think its size, weight and the fact it comes in its own little box impressed him; so much so that he has even brought it over to friends’ houses to show it off. It’s not particularly dense inside, reflecting the usual DK style of info boxes around photographs, and the information given on each topic is brief, but it makes excellent browsing material and I’ve had lots of facts repeated back to me, He’s also now amazed at the concept of the 20 volume encyclopaedias of old.
